Online Reputation

Your online reputation is so important, especially in this day and age.  Often employers will search your name online to see what they can find.  It is not hard to find pictures and posts about people on the internet because almost everyone has at least a few social media platforms.  This is the perfect opportunity to find things out about people who you do not know much about yet.  I gave the example of an employer looking up a potential employee but we are not all employers.  A more common example of this would be the social media stalking we all do.  

Something I am guilty of doing is looking someone up before a date if I don't know them well.  I do this for safety reasons and just to see what their interests are.  Also, I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they set up their social media page and by what they post.  You can see how organized they are or how often they are on social media.  If they post pictures, sometimes the quality of the pictures says a lot about them.  Also, you can see who they like to spend their time with and maybe a little bit about their family.  As you can see, social media plays a big role in your online reputation. 

I wanted to see what I could find out about someone I do not know much about.  In my social media class here at Utah State University, there is a guy named Chandler Olson who I have decided to look up online.  Let’s see what kind of online reputation he has!

The first thing I did was search his name in Google.  Then, I went to google images to see what came up on there.  I didn’t see any obvious pictures of Chandler on there.  Going back to the results of the Google search though, I was able to find his Facebook profile which you can find here.  Chandler does not have a profile picture up on Facebook nor does he have anything posted.    I am guessing he just got a Facebook page to stay connected and updated with our Social Media class.  There wasn’t much information on him this social media platform but I did find his LinkedIn page. 

LinkedIn is a very professional site for you to share the experience you have with work and helping the community.  It is the best site to build your professional network on.  Based on Chandler’s LinkedIn profile I know that he is a student at Utah State University and lives in Logan, Utah.  He has been working as a Service Delivery Manager for Edwards Home and Furnishings Inc. since July 2016.  According to his profile, some of his interests and hobbies include skydiving, motor cross and snowboarding.  You can find his account here. 

The next social media site I found Chandler Olson on was Twitter.  Twitter limits you to 180 characters a post so it is mostly just for your random thoughts, funny ideas, or invites to parties.  People also post a lot of pictures and videos.  Based on Chandler’s Twitter account, I can see that he takes interest in cars, the outdoors, animals and likes the posts that make you laugh.  You can find his account here. 

The last social media account that I wanted to point out was his Instagram page.  You can find his account here.  Instagram is for you to share pictures of your adventures and the people you like to be with, along with other things.  On Chandler’s account he has lots of pictures of friends, family, and the people he cares about.  Also, he has pictures of animals (especially his pet snakes) and pictures of his adventures in the snow and on the lake. 

Overall, Chandler Olson has a good online reputation.  You can tell he cares about his friends and family.  He also loves being outdoors and loves cars.  Looking someone’s name up online is so easy and obviously can give you a lot of information about a person.  It is important that we manage our own online reputation so we produce a good image for the public and other people who want to stalk our social media pages.
