Location Based Platforms

A location based platform is any service that uses the geographical location of your cell phone or device to help provide you with the necessary information or even to entertain you.  A few of the most recognizable and common platforms that use our location are Facebook, Google, Pokemon Go, and FindMyFriends on the iPhones.  I bet that you have at least one of these platforms and that your location is turned on in the app.  That means you are allowing your cell phone to use your location.  A lot of times I will allow my apps to use my location because that is the only way the app will work or it will improve the efficiency of the app, but is it safe?

When you make a post on Facebook, you can easily tag your location along with it.  If you post a picture with your location and maybe tag a friend who is also in the picture, that gives a predator a lot of information about how to find you.  With something like that, at least make sure your account is private. 

Some platforms can use your location for entertainment too! For instance, Pokemon go uses your location.  You have to travel all around town to find the Pokemon.  That can be exciting because it suddenly feels like it is more real.  Another thing that comes to my mind is Snapchat.  If you allow the app to use your location you can take a picture and use the filters that are specific to the town or state you are in.  They also have fun filters for amusement parks you attend or colleges you are at.  It is entertaining and I do not mind having my location on for snapchat because it isn't being shared with anyone. 

Although many location based platforms can be dangerous to use, there are several location apps now that can help you stay safe.  One that my roommates and I constantly use is the FindMyFriends app for the Apple devices.  You can connect with family, friends and, in my case, the people you live with.  Through this app you are able to share your location with them which allows them to see where you are.  Whenever I go out on a date, I make sure my roommates know and they check up on my location to make sure I am where I said I would be.  They can know I am safe and it is comforting for me to know that they are aware.  If something were to happen to me, I probably would not have the time to call or message anyone.  This is a quick, efficient and modern way of looking after someone.  Many parents, including mine, are fond of this app.  They are able to keep track of their kids and know they are safe.
